  1. This is a buggy product. There are NO drivers for Windows Vista and above. I tried 4 versions after searching high and low on the web (HL-340, CH341SER, etc). I have found no one with a clearly successful Vista installation that works. After all my tries, my PC stopped even recognizing the USB insertion and ignores the cable completely (smarter than I am!)

Drivers for XP and lower are hard to come by, as others have explained and trying to get them from seller is frustrating since they will send you a file with several driver folders (none labeled CPA-1030 or close)…and you have to open all of them to find the one you need…and that was not successful either. Spent 2 days and 6 hours on this ‘10 dollar project’.

SAVE YOURSELF TIME AND FRUSTRATION…Spend an extra USD 4.00 and get a brand name product from a known seller.

  2. Worked as advertised. Used it to interface with a 1997 Storm Clausing CNC lathe that only had DB9 connection. Plugged in and worked fine.

  3. I had high hopes for these – most modern laptops only have one serial port, we sometimes need several for work projects, and it’s hard to travel with a desktop computer.

The hardware comes w/o any manual, and with only a half-sized CD-ROM for drivers. I have almost a dozen CD/DVD readers, none could read the drivers for these. I had to use the device manager to find the device “name” (USB-SER!), then dig around online (google) until I found a note from someone else that it needs a different driver installed (USB-SERIAL CH340). Google around to find a place to download the driver.

Even with the new driver installed, if I unplug the cable and plug it back in, it reverts to the original ID and stops working, forcing me to use the device manager to “update” the driver manually to the CH340 driver. At least by doing this via the device manager, I can see which com port it is.

Once the driver is properly associated, it seems to work very well.

Note – it may show up under com ports, or under unknown USB devices.

    XP-pro SP3.

  4. I bought this to update the firmware for my PROceed piggyback computer for my BMW. Upon plugging in the device, I was prompted for drivers. Normally not a problem, but the lack of a manual had me hunting through many folders trying to find the correct software.

Once the drivers were installed, I was able to perform the firmware update without a hitch.
